Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (nicknamed, "Ali") was born to parents Didier, a former professional European handball player and Chemistry teacher and Evelyne, a teacher. He has a younger brother, named Enzo. Tsonga credits his parents, saying he received strength from his father and kindness from his mother. His parents still live in his hometown of Le Mans, famous for 24 Hours of Le Mans, an endurance car race, and les Rillettes.
In 2003, Tsonga finished as the No. 2 ranked junior behind Marcos Baghdatis, but won the US Open Junior title by beating Baghdatis. In 2007, he was named the ATP Newcomer of the Year, and won the ATP Most Improved Player of the Year in 2008.
